Health experts recommend breastfeeding for many reasons. Breast milk provides all the nutrients your child needs in the first six months of life. It has antibodies to help your newborn fight off infection. Plus, breastfeeding has benefits for you, too, like helping you lose pregnancy weight. Once you get the hang of it, breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your baby.

But the fact is, breastfeeding can also be hard. Keep in mind, both you and your baby are learning a new skill at the same time. And your body is adjusting to producing enough food for another human. As with any new skill, expect some mishaps, confusion and, yes, even tears along the way. You may face added challenges too, like low milk supply or blocked ducts.

Our lactation consultants have seen it all. And they're here to help you.

Lactation Consultants and Breastfeeding Support at Luminis Health

Mothers-in-law and best friends are well intentioned, but what worked for them might not work for you. Our lactation consultants listen to your experience, troubleshoot with you and give advice that's targeted to you and your baby.

All Luminis Health's lactation consultants are internationally board certified. We have years of experience and a wealth of knowledge. We can help with:

  • A poor latch.
  • Pain with breastfeeding.
  • The best breastfeeding and/or pumping schedule for you and your baby.
  • Training your baby to go from the breast to the bottle, or vice versa.
  • Issues like low milk supply.
  • Concerns about a negative breastfeeding experience with a previous child.
  • Worry about whether your baby is getting enough milk.

What to Expect

Our lactation consultants are on the hospital floor. If you plan to breastfeed, a lactation consultant visits you shortly after you give birth. And if you're having any trouble with breastfeeding during your stay, just ask to speak with us. We're at your service, 24/7.

Once you're home, we continue to support you. You can call our breastfeeding support line anytime. If you call between 9am and 3pm, a lactation expert picks up the phone. If you call after hours, someone responds to you within a day.

Breastfeeding Classes, Support Groups and Pump Rentals

Besides providing one-on-one support, Luminis Health offers breastfeeding classes to teach parents getting ready to breastfeed and those who have just started about all things breastfeeding. This includes getting the right latch to how to pump and store breast milk when you're back at work, and so much more.

You may also benefit from connecting with breastfeeding parents who understand what you're going through. We offer breastfeeding support groups at Luminis Health. In addition, you can find out about other lactation groups and resources in your area by calling our breastfeeding support line. Because, sometimes, it really does take a village.

Speaking of breast pumps, did you know that your insurance company might pay for one? We also have hospital-grade electric breast pumps available for rent.
