We understand depression and anxiety can cast a shadow over your life. We're here to let the light back in.

Luminis Health provides a complete support system for depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges.

Depression and anxiety can leave you feeling like you're all alone. But you're not. More than 41% of adults now say they have depression or anxiety.

What Is Depression?

Depression is a disease. It affects one in six adults at some point in their life.

Depression can cause you to feel sad, empty and hopeless. You may struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep or you may sleep too much. Or eat too much or not at all. You may avoid the people and things that once brought you joy.

Depression does more than just affect your mood. You feel, think and act differently. It can trigger thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

There are many types and causes of depression. We can help you find your way through whatever depression you face.

What Is Anxiety?

Sudden, intense or uncontrollable fear, panic or worry. Anxiety can freeze you in the moment and in your life. More than 31% of U.S. adults struggle with anxiety at some point in their lives.

There are many types and causes of anxiety. It's not something you can "just get over." But it is something you can learn to work through and manage with the right treatment.

The Region's Most Comprehensive Mental Health Care

You're not alone at Luminis Health. We're with you every step of the way to better mental health. We offer a specialized, team-based approach.

The J. Kent McNew Family Medical Center provides:

  • Inpatient and outpatient mental health services.
  • An acute inpatient mental health unit.
  • Psychiatric day treatment services, with Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) for both adults and adolescents.
  • Outpatient therapy and medication management for adults and adolescents.

All these services are there for you at one convenient location. And if you have mental health challenges related to substance use, Luminis Health Pathways is on the same campus.

No matter what point you enter our care, we can step up or step down services to meet your needs: The right treatment at the right time and in the right place.

The acute inpatient mental health unit is a hospital-based level of care provided in a safe and secure environment. This highest level of care stabilizes the most severe psychiatric conditions and develops connections for returning you to the community and your support systems. Inpatient hospital care is but one service within our co-located continuum of care.

You'll get focused attention at our PHP. There's a program for adults (18 and older) and one for adolescents aged 13 and up. This program is typically five days per week and six to seven hours per day. It's for those transitioning from inpatient care or if you need help managing your mental health to prevent hospitalization. IOPs are a step down from the PHP services. We offer IOPs for adults and adolescents and services are typically three days per week and four hours per day.

Outpatient mental health services are the more well-known services that include individual therapy and or medication management, if needed. These services assist in your ongoing recovery while you return to work, school and other daily activities.

Sometimes you can't get to your health care provider's office. Luminis Health offers telehealth services for mental health. You can see your provider from the comfort of your own home. Or wherever it's convenient for you.

Our staff includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurses, social workers and counselors. All are specially trained to handle your mental health needs. Your trust matters to us. Your mental health care team works together to provide you expert and compassionate care.

Managing mental health takes coordination. Our psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and licensed mental health clinicians provide consultations within the Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center's Emergency Room (ER) and medical units. These specialty consultations occur when an ER attending physician or the medical unit requests them. This team approach is to ensure we meet you needs whether you enter the hospital with a mental health crisis or with a medical crisis that also includes mental health issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety can impact all areas of your life. At work and school. In your personal relationships. Your financial, emotional and physical health.

Maybe you're too embarrassed to get help. Or you think you can figure it out on your own. Or you don't think treatment will work.

There's no shame in needing help. Putting your mental health first is one of the bravest and smartest things you can do for you and those you love.

Treatment works. Tackling your depression and anxiety early can prevent symptoms from getting worse. It can keep you out of the hospital and help you live your best life.

Diagnosis

At Luminis Health, we look at the big picture. Your care begins with a full mental health and medical assessment. That's because other health issues can impact your mental health.

Depression and Anxiety Treatments

With your mental health team, you'll decide on the best treatment plan for you.

  • Medications

Medications effectively treat many mental health issues. Antidepressants are the most prescribed. Sometimes, your healthcare provider prescribes antipsychotics or anticonvulsants. But there's no one-size-fits-all medication.

How you react to one medication is different from how someone else may react. It takes time for medications to work. And getting the dose right is important, too. Your psychiatric team works closely with you to find the best medication at the right dose for you. We won't rest until we get it right.

  • Psychotherapy

Helping you rethink how you think. That's the goal of cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy, whether that's in a group or one-on-one. We'll help you learn to walk through the darkness and into the light.

  • Combination therapy

For many people with depression or anxiety, a combination of medications and psychotherapy offers the best chance of getting better and staying well.

Preventive Care for Depression and Anxiety

At Luminis Health, we help you work on thought and lifestyle changes that can head off a depression- or anxiety-related crisis.

Many of these skills are taught while in our services. We also offer access to community-based peer groups that meet on the campus and at other locations to foster ongoing community-based supports for individuals once they've left our care.

Support and Resources for Depression and Anxiety
