Murtaza Dawood, MD is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon who is recognized for performing operations for complex valve disease and atrial fibrillation. He is known for treating mitral valve regurgitation as well as aortic valve disease.
Before joining LHAAMC, Dr. Dawood served as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Division of Cardiac Surgery. He was also the Surgical Director for the University of Maryland Program in Atrial Fibrillation and Structural Heart Program. He brought minimally invasive and hybrid therapies for atrial fibrillation to Maryland.
In addition to providing excellent care to his patients, Dr. Dawood also dedicates time to research. He has published more than 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals has served as Primary Investigator (PI) on several national clinical trials. As part of one of these trials, Dr. Dawood was the first in the nation to perform a mitral valve repair on a beating heart.
Dr. Dawood is also focused on education. He serves as a Surgeon-Proctor for complex structural heart cases as well as minimally invasive atrial fibrillation surgery. Prior to joining LHAAMC, he served as associate program director for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency/Fellowship at the University of Maryland. He continues to train cardiology and surgical fellows across the country in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).
Dr. Dawood is originally from Maryland, and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.S. in Physiology & Neurobiology. He attended medical school at Saba University School of Medicine in the Netherland-Antilles. He received his surgical training at the Western Reserve Care System in Ohio, and the Ohio State University Medical Center for cardiothoracic surgery. He completed an Adult Structural Heart Fellowship at the University of Maryland where he remained as faculty until joining LHAAMC.
