The Department of Surgery at LHAAMC has undergone significant growth over the last few years. Among our greatest achievements is our Surgery Residency Program, which received initial accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education effective July 1, 2016. Our categorical program began with our first group of residents on July 1, 2017, with a complement of three residents per year. We have celebrated milestone achievements with our graduating residents who have either matched into fellowships or entered into practice. The LHAAMC Surgery Residency Program promises to offer you a vast surgical experience in all surgical disciplines providing an appropriate balance of training and mentorship.
We are fortunate to be supported by our GME Leadership, and our experienced, knowledgeable faculty sharing more than 20 years of aggregate experience in Graduate Medical Education. As a faculty, we are committed to the principles of patient-centered, value-based care and will teach our residents in this model.
Our goal is to train competent and compassionate surgeons who will serve our patients as well as understand the ongoing social and economic opportunities of modern medicine. Our comprehensive academic curriculum combines lectures, conferences, and protected time in our premier simulation center, the Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning Center (SAIL Center). Our GME inter-professional 1st year series rotates curricula in Research, Bioethics/Medical Humanities, Well-being and Society & Medicine to support our residents as our future leaders in healthcare.
Our affiliations with the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Hospital allows our residents to supplement their training at large academic institutions with specific off-campus experience in trauma, pediatric surgery and liver-pancreas transplant rotations. Our academic affiliations with George Washington University SOM and University of Maryland SOM offer our residents the opportunity to teach medical students. Our residents participate in both quality and research projects and will be expected to present their work and publish their data.
This thorough and thoughtful learning environment will provide you with the skill and professional confidence you need to enter any fellowship program and pursue a career in academic surgery or begin work in private practice.

Annapolis is a historic colonial town with a personality all its own. A stone’s throw away from the Chesapeake Bay, you can take in the sights and sounds of one of the Northeast’s most well-known waterways. And with easy access to major cities, like Baltimore and D.C., you can also enjoy everything city life has to offer.
But we’re so much more than our prime location to picture-perfect beaches and bustling cities. We’re a campus designed with you in mind. Our welcoming and attractive grounds evoke a spirit of peace and community; our sophisticated facilities a sense of pride; and our caring team a feeling of community. We’re a safe place to learn. Challenge. Grow. Belong.
We’re also an institution committed to innovation. To changing the future of health care. And we want you to join our team.
And while you may not be able to experience all our campus has to offer firsthand right now, we hope you’ll enjoy our resident-guided virtual tours.
